Free shipping thresholds: how to qualify without overspending
"Free shipping on orders over $49" is one of the most effective ways stores get you to spend more. When it's worth topping up your cart, and smarter ways to avoid delivery fees.
Shipping fees are one of the main reasons people abandon online carts, and stores know it. That's why so many offer free shipping above a certain order value. For the store, it raises the average order. For you, it can be a genuine saving or a trap that makes you spend $20 to save $6. Here's how to make thresholds work in your favour.
Do the simple maths first
Before adding anything, compare two numbers:
- The shipping fee you'd pay on your current order.
- The cost of the cheapest useful item that gets you over the threshold.
If your cart is at $42, the threshold is $49 and shipping costs $6.99, adding an $8 item you don't need means you spend $1 more than paying for shipping, and get something you didn't want. Adding an $8 item you were going to buy next month is a real saving.
Good ways to reach the threshold
- Household consumables: things you use up and will need again, such as batteries, cleaning supplies, toiletries or printer paper.
- Planned future purchases: a birthday gift coming up, a replacement charger you know you'll need.
- Small accessories for what you're already buying, like a case for a new phone. Our chargers and cables guide explains which ones are worth buying.
- Group orders: combine an order with a family member, friend or colleague who shops at the same store.
- Waiting: keep a list and place one larger order instead of several small ones.
Watch how the threshold is counted
Stores calculate thresholds differently, and it matters when you also use a code:
- Before or after discounts: if the threshold is checked after your coupon, a $52 cart with a $5 code becomes $47 and loses free shipping. Sometimes it's better to skip a small code and keep free shipping, or to add one more item.
- Excluded items: gift cards, large items and marketplace items from third-party sellers often don't count.
- Shipping speed: free shipping usually means the slowest standard option. Express delivery still costs extra.
- Location: thresholds can differ by country or region, and remote areas may be excluded.
Alternatives to topping up
Free shipping codes
Some stores publish codes that give free shipping regardless of order value, especially during holiday periods. Check the store's page on Couponova before you start adding filler items.
Click and collect
Many retailers with physical stores let you order online and pick up for free. If there is a store or pick-up point near you, this often beats any threshold.
Membership programmes
Paid memberships with free delivery can pay for themselves if you order often from one store, but they're a poor deal if you only order a few times a year. Add up what you spent on shipping last year before signing up, and remember to cancel free trials you don't want to keep.
Free shipping days
Some stores run occasional free shipping events, often in the run-up to the holidays. If your order isn't urgent, waiting a couple of weeks may save the fee.
The international angle
For cross-border orders, shipping is often a much bigger share of the cost, and the "free shipping" option can take weeks. Some international marketplaces combine items from one seller into a single parcel only above a certain value. If you're shipping to another country through a forwarding service, the forwarding fee usually depends on weight and size rather than order value. Our guide to buying from US stores when you live abroad explains how to estimate it.
Know when to just pay for shipping
Sometimes paying the fee is the smart choice: when you need something quickly, when the item is a one-off, or when topping up would push you over your budget. Saving $6 on shipping by spending $15 on extras isn't saving at all. Combine that discipline with a working coupon, and our guide to stacking discounts, and you'll pay less without filling your home with things you didn't need.
Common questions
Is it worth adding items to get free shipping?
Only if the extra item costs less than the shipping fee, or is something you were going to buy anyway. Otherwise you spend more than the fee you avoided.
Does a coupon code count toward a free shipping minimum?
It depends on the store. Some check the threshold before discounts and some after. If it is checked after, a code can push the order back under the minimum.
How else can I avoid shipping fees?
Look for free shipping codes, use click-and-collect if the store has branches nearby, combine orders with family or friends, or wait for a store's free shipping event.
