The best time to buy electronics: a month-by-month guide
TVs, laptops, phones and gadgets follow predictable price cycles. When each category is usually cheapest, which sales events matter, and when waiting beats any coupon.
Electronics prices aren't random. Most product categories follow a yearly rhythm driven by new model launches, big retail events and seasonal demand. Knowing the rhythm lets you time bigger purchases, and tells you when a "deal" is really just the normal price for that time of year.
The patterns below describe how prices have tended to behave in recent years, mainly at large US and international online retailers. Every year is a little different, so treat this as a guide, not a guarantee.
The year at a glance
| Month | Often good for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| January | TVs, fitness tech, leftover holiday stock | Post-holiday clearance; new TV models announced |
| February | TVs, home theatre | Big US sports events and Presidents' Day sales |
| March | Accessories, gadgets from Asian marketplaces | Anniversary sales on some marketplaces |
| April–May | Previous-year TVs, cameras | New models arrive in stores; older stock is cleared |
| June–July | Smart home devices, headphones, tablets | Mid-year sales and large online shopping events |
| August | Laptops, tablets, printers | Back-to-school promotions |
| September | Previous-generation phones | New flagship phones launch |
| October | Gadgets, early holiday deals | Autumn online events and early Black Friday pricing |
| November | Almost everything | 11.11, Black Friday and Cyber Monday |
| December | Gift-size gadgets, then clearance after Christmas | Last-minute offers and year-end clearance |
TVs
New TV ranges are usually announced in January and reach shops in the spring. That makes spring and early summer a good time to buy the previous year's models as stores clear space. The other strong window is November: Black Friday is traditionally the best time of year for TV prices.
Be careful with very cheap Black Friday TVs from big brands: some are special models with lower specifications than similar-looking sets. Compare the exact model number.
Laptops and tablets
Back-to-school season, from July to early September, brings student promotions and bundles. November is strong as well. Laptop makers refresh ranges at different times, often when new processors arrive, and the outgoing models are discounted. If you're a student, also check our guide to student and other identity-based discounts, which can be combined with seasonal offers at some stores.
Smartphones
Major flagship phones usually launch on a yearly cycle, many in late summer and autumn and others early in the year. When a new model comes out, the previous one often drops in price or appears in more promotions. Brand-new flagships are rarely discounted heavily in their first months, so if you want the latest model, the saving usually comes from trade-in offers or carrier deals rather than coupons.
Mid-range and gaming phones from brands that sell online, such as Redmagic, often appear in 11.11 and Black Friday promotions.
Headphones, speakers and smart home devices
These are some of the most heavily discounted items during big online events, especially in July, October and November, when retailers push their own-brand devices. Prices outside these windows can be noticeably higher, so if it's not urgent, wait.
Cameras and drones
Camera makers launch new bodies irregularly, and the outgoing model is often discounted afterwards. Bundles with lenses, cards and bags are common around the holidays.
Accessories: chargers, cables, cases
Small accessories are discounted all year, especially on marketplaces and gadget stores such as Geekbuying. The bigger risk here is quality, not price. Our chargers and cables guide explains what to look for.
Gaming consoles and games
Console bundles and game discounts peak in November. Digital game stores also run large seasonal sales, often in summer and winter.
When not to wait
Timing is useful, but it shouldn't cost you more than it saves:
- If something broke and you need it now, buy now. Look for a coupon code on the current price, consider an open-box or refurbished model, and move on.
- If the model you want might sell out or be discontinued, a fair price today can beat a hypothetical better price later.
- If the difference is small, the months of use you'd lose by waiting may be worth more.
How to catch the best price whenever you buy
- Set a price alert with a price tracking tool or the store's wishlist.
- Check price history so you know what a genuinely low price looks like; see how to tell if a sale is real.
- Check Couponova for a current code from the store.
- Read the return policy and warranty before you pay, especially on marketplaces.
